Ball mills: lining and grinding media
Ceramic, glaze and mineral-filler plants grind in mills lined with alumina bricks and charged with alumina balls, to keep iron out of the product. The two wear together, so they are best specified together.

Typical set-ups
| Material ground | Lining | Media |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic body for tiles and sanitaryware | 92 % alumina bricks | 92 % balls; 68 % or 75 % where contamination allows |
| Glaze, frit and pigments | 92 % or 95 % alumina bricks | 92 % or 95 % balls |
| Mineral fillers — feldspar, quartz, calcium carbonate, kaolin | 92 % alumina bricks | 92 % balls |
When you reline
- Bricks are chosen from standard shapes to suit the mill diameter; the factory prepares a brick schedule.
- Review the ball charge at the same time — lining and media wear together.
- Include the door bricks; they are shaped to the opening.

Questions
Why alumina instead of steel or silex?
Alumina brings no iron into the product, which matters for glaze and white bodies, and it is denser and more wear-resistant than natural flint. The trade-off is price; we can show where a lower grade is acceptable.
Can we buy the lining now and the balls later?
Yes. We keep the grades consistent so the next media order matches the lining.
Send the duty conditions.
We recommend the lining, state where it stops working, and quote once the parameters are confirmed.
