Ball mill lining bricks
Alumina bricks line ball mills used for ceramic body, glaze and mineral grinding. A replacement enquiry needs more than a brick size: identify the mill, the lining area and the information behind each dimension. Standard shapes are combined to suit the mill; the proposed arrangement, supply scope and any brick schedule must be confirmed for the actual order.

Standard shapes
| Shape | Size, mm (L × W/w × H) | Role in the lining |
|---|---|---|
| Rectangle | 150 × 50 × H | Straight courses |
| Trapezoid | 150 × 50/45 × H | Tapers so the ring follows the shell |
| Half rectangle | 75 × 50 × H | Staggers joints at the ends of courses |
| Half trapezoid | 75 × 50/45 × H | Staggers joints in tapered courses |
| Flake (closer) | 150 × 25/20 × H | Closes the ring tightly |
| Door bricks | Shaped to the opening, e.g. Ø350 | Lines the mill door |
| Interlocking bricks | Tongue-and-groove profiles, to drawing | Lock neighbouring courses so joints stay closed |
H is the lining thickness, typically 40, 50 or 60 mm. Rectangles and trapezoids are combined according to the mill’s internal diameter.
Grade
92 % alumina is the standard lining grade. 95 % is used where wear is heavier or contamination limits are stricter, often together with 95 % media.
Lining and media together
Bricks and grinding balls wear together and are bought by the same person. When you reline, review the ball charge at the same time; we quote both in one offer and keep the alumina grades consistent. See alumina grinding balls.

Before requesting a brick count, identify the measurement basis
A mill model, an old drawing and a measurement taken over worn lining may describe different conditions. Send the available information with its source and date. Mark dimensions that are estimates or still need checking; do not treat them as an approved layout.
| What to identify | What to send | What remains to be confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Mill and drawing | Equipment model; drawing number and revision; units | Whether the drawing represents the mill being relined |
| Diameter and length | Dimensions with a note explaining where they were measured, and whether lining is present | The dimensions to use for the proposed lining arrangement |
| Replacement area | Full relining or a local replacement; cylinder, end walls and door/opening areas listed separately | Which areas and interfaces are included in the supply |
| Existing lining | Current brick shapes, nominal thickness if known, and any previous brick schedule | Whether existing shapes can be reused as a reference, rather than assumed equivalent |
| Quantity basis | Number of mills; quantity by confirmed item where available; spare pieces listed separately | Final piece counts, packing and any agreed spare allowance |
Individual bricks are not the same as a complete lining set
For a repeat purchase of identified bricks, send the approved item drawing and quantity for each shape. For a complete relining enquiry, also identify which parts of the mill must be covered. State whether end-wall pieces, door pieces, closers, installation materials or laying instructions are required; none should be assumed included from the phrase “one set”.
The customer’s responsible technical team and the supplying factory need to agree the arrangement and interfaces before the relevant items are released for manufacture. This checklist is for preparing an enquiry, not a laying design or permission to enter, inspect or modify equipment. Obtain equipment information through the site’s authorised procedures.
Keep open items separate from the confirmed schedule
Label each input as confirmed, reference only or awaiting verification. If a drawing is unavailable, ask whether the information is sufficient for a preliminary supply review. A preliminary quantity is not an approved bill of materials. Material suitability, the final layout, installation responsibility and quotation timing remain subject to the actual review.
Questions
How is the brick quantity worked out?
The quantity depends on the agreed mill geometry, lining thickness, replacement areas and arrangement of shapes. Send the drawing or dimensions with their measurement basis, plus the number of mills. Confirm who prepares and approves the brick schedule and what it covers before treating the count as final.
Which thickness should we use?
Send the specified thickness, the existing lining information and the process conditions. Thickness affects the space available inside the mill, but it does not by itself establish service life. Material and thickness must be reviewed for the actual duty; this page does not set a universal selection rule.
Do you install linings?
No. We supply the bricks and the factory’s laying instructions; installation is by your team or a local contractor.
Relining soon?
Send the mill drawing or dimensions, the measurement basis and the areas being replaced. We will review the enquiry and confirm the proposed supply scope and any further information needed. A brick schedule or combined media offer is subject to the actual project review.
